In the first quarter moon, exactly half of the moon is illuminated by sunlight, and the other half remains in the shadow. It has been said to appear ‘cut in half’, hence the interpretation of a half moon. This is not due to its placement in the lunar cycle, but more so the emphasis is on where the light begins and ends.
Let that breathe.
